More Evidence That Drugs Cause Brain Damage (among Legislators)
Imagine if Congress included authorization to air commercials opposing the efforts of the Sierra Club as part of the budget appropriation for the EPA. Advocates everywhere would be screaming about abuse of power and stifling the political dialogue. And yet note the eerie silence as Congress is on the verge of approving a bill that "clarifies that the [drug office] director is not prohibited from carrying out his statutory duty to oppose the legalization of illicit drugs under the media campaign" (in the words of the bill's sponsor, Mark Souder, R-Ind.).
In other words, Congress is authorizing an agency of the Executive branch to use tax dollars to run ads taking a clear advocacy position on a live political issue - advocacy that may even include funding the campaigns of politicians opposed to drug legalization.
Even if you're ambivalent on the issue of legalization itself, you may want to let your Congressman know this is not an appropriate use of your money. Here's a way to send a fax to your representative.
