Five Days in July
This is the first of what will doubtless be numerous posts about activities for the week of July 16-20 as that date draws nearer. Those, of course, are the dates for Comic-Con International: San Diego 2004 - four and a half days of unbridaled pop-culture madness where an army of freaks and geeks takes over downtown San Diego. Part carnival, part flea-market, part industry trade-show, part film festival and 100% insanity, the San Diego Comic-Con sprawls over the entire 300,000 square feet of the Convention Center, over 25 concurrent programming tracks, and 24-hour-a-day films, parties, entertainment, gaming tournaments, etc. Among this year's guests are writer Neil Gaiman and industry pioneer Will Eisner (who, as usual, will host the Will Eisner Awards for best comics of the year). Last year, the Con drew a staggering 70,000 visitors, guests and exhbitors. There's really nothing else like it on earth.
