Good Guys and Bad Guys
Neil Gaiman, writer of some of the smartest and prettiest comics of the last 10 years (e.g., Sandman), squared off against Todd McFarlane, creator of some of the dumbest and ugliest comics of the last 10 years (e.g., Spawn) in a long-awaited grudge match in a Wisconsin court room this week. Gaiman claimed that McFarlane had violated several contracts pertaining to characters that Gaiman created during a brief stint scripting Spawn in 1992, and subsequently reneged on a deal to return Gaiman's interest in the British character Miracleman. Just like in the comics, the good guys won. The court found for Gaiman on all seven counts in a ruling McFarlane's attorneys characterized as a "nightmare."
