Coffee Blackout
Over the last few weeks, I've been experiencing occasional headaches, restless sleep, muscle tightness and general irritability. Part of it is that I'm under a lot of stress with a work project I'm doing, but I was beginning to think some of these symptoms might have something to do with the pot of black coffee I consume throughout the course of each morning. Per the local custom here in Seattle, we're not talking Maxwell House, either. My preference is for dark roast, strong and black. I buy it in bulk at the Costco.
Yesterday, I decided to try an experiment. No more bean juice for a week. Maybe a cup of decaf now and then to satisfy the muscle-memory reflex of reaching for a cup by the keyboard, or some herb tea to provide warmth on the increasingly cold, dark and wet afternoons. But none of the strong stuff.
Day one actually went well. No problems getting out of bed, focussing on work, etc. Today is a different story. Headaches, tiredness, lack of energy, unexpected hunger. I just conked out at the gym about 25% through my usual routine.
Could still be the stress, could be that I'm coming down with a cold, but I'm sensing there's some withdrawal symptoms at work here. It will be interesting to make it to the end of the seven days, then try to get back to a more sane pattern of consumption - maybe one cup a day, or a pot that's 75% decaf.
