Great Day for a Ball Game
Chicago's painful loss last night made Cubs fans of us all for a few hours - meaning, teased horribly by false expectations, only to be smacked across the face, for the 40th or 50th time, by the wet trout of disappointment. Yeah, there was that one freakish play in Game Six to feed everyone's favorite metaphysical conspiracy theories, but the sad fact is that the Cubs two best pitchers were outpitched, their genius manager outmanaged, and their potent lineup outplayed top to bottom in the last three games by the less-surprising-by-the-day scrappy Florida Marlins. As a result, the walking dung heap that is Jeff Loria (Marlins owner) gets to see his team go to the World Series, and for the Cubs, say it with me, "Wait till next year!"
Meanwhile, Game Seven of the Yankees-Red Sox has the makings of an all-time classic. Roger Clemens, pitching possibly his final game ever, against Pedro Martinez, in Yankees Stadium, for all the marbles. Only the stupidest of stupid money would favor the Sox in this game, but stranger things have happened. Out here in Seattle, Pedro looks about 100 feet tall, since he's, what, 14-0 or something ridiculous against the Mariners? Apparently he doesn't give the Yankees quite such a hard time. Still, should be one for the ages. God help the telemarketer who calls here between 4:45 and, oh, 8:00 pm tonight.
