Fear This Factor

My God, what's happened? Bill O'Reily has taken over writing Atrios! Read it, but if you laugh to hard, Bill will tell you to SHUT UP!

Brain Drain

Scholarship lost two provocative and thoughtful voices today. Edward Said, the influential Palestinian advocate and philosopher, died of Lukemia at age 67. Also George Plimpton, the founder of the literary magazine Paris Review and one of the leading figures of American letters, who was 76.

I loved Plimpton for his wit and diversity of interests. I admired Said for the same qualities, though believe his attempts to deconstruct Western approaches to Middle Eastern and Asian cultures was needlessly destructive and unfairly critical of important universal values. Both were members of the dwindling ranks of public intellectuals, whose participation in the debates of their times brought new ideas into wider discussion and who gave us new ways to understand and appreciate the world around us.

Debate Bait

Didn't catch the whole debate yesterday afternoon - only saw the highlights that CNN dubbed exciting enough for replay. Looked like everyone did a good job, although someone really needs to tell these guys that most Democrats don't care which one wins as long as he can beat Bush. I like Dean and I think I like Clark, but I'd vote for any of the other top-liners, even Lieberman, if that's what it came down to. I think all but the most hopeless Kucinischites feel the same way. So please, guys, save the replay-ready soundbites for the general election and stay on-message with your own platform. People will figure out where the differences are without anyone needing to go negative.

And for the no-hopers, it's time to thank your supporters (or apologize to them for taking their money), turn your campaign chests over to the National Committee and call it a day. The contenders - Dean, Clark, Kerry, Lieberman, Gephardt and maybe Edwards - need the oxygen.
