Odds and Ends
Just started working on a new contract this week, so things will be fairly busy for the next few weeks. Sorry in advance for a spotty posting schedule.
Saw Al Franken at the University of Washington last night. He was hilarious, delivering a stand-up comedy routine, mostly of material from his book Lies and the Lying Liars who Tell Them. Anyone who enjoyed it on the printed page should be sure to check out the live act. There was some new stuff too, including a great impression of Dick Cheney forcing himself to utter the words "evil-doers."
Jimmy Breslin is one of the great students of American culture and society, and someone who has always had a keen appreciation for the people and values that make up our national character. And boy is he pissed off about what's going on right now.
E.J. Dionne makes the good point that Bush-hating is not necessarily the same as left-wing ideology, and that a lot of the strongest opposition to Bush is coming from pragmatic moderates.
There's an interesting bit at Daily Kos about how Bush claims that he doesn't read news from media sources, but gets it only from his own staff. This to ensure he is getting "objective news" rather than opinions.
New polls show Bush's disapproval at 47% (approval at 48%). Those are bad, bad numbers.
Finally, in yesterday's post, I was not suggesting that Kennedy should not have said what he did - only that there may be more fruitful avenues of criticism that may appeal to people who aren't already true-believers.
