On the Fritz
Although it does grave harm to Democratic ambitions to retake the Senate next year, I can't really work up much regret over the impending retirement of Senator Ernest "Fritz" Hollings (D-SC). Hollings represents the worst kind of special-interest Democrat, whose dealing with companies like Disney put him on the wrong side of many key civil liberties and personal freedom issues. He was also an uncertain vote on critical tax policies, and occasionally embarassing to the party when one of his "tart, down-home" witicisms was played up in the press as plain old mean-spiritied stupidity. South Carolina is a long-shot for any Democrat right now, but maybe having some new blood in the race might improve the morale, if not the odds, of the uphill struggle.
