Breathe
While visiting fellow blogger Mark Hoback's Fried Green Al-Qaedas the other day, I was drawn into a discussion about the tediousness of warblogging. Needless to say, here at EA, we offer only the most compelling, trenchant analyses of current events -- nevertheless, the shoe seemed to fit... The problem is, everytime I sit down to write something, I am overcome with this terrible sense of loss: that the America that I believe in, that I grew up in and was proud to be a part of is unravelling before my eyes. Through the acts of a small group of people now in control of our government, we're becoming something foreign and terrible. To remain silent in the face of it was, and remains, impossible for me.
Mark offered these words of wisdom in response to my comment: "Rob, we got to think about how to talk about this in creative ways. The old words are gone." He's right, of course. But finding those creative ways isn't as easy as sitting down and writing a good didactic rant (at least it isn't for me). Plus, we're in a period of information vertigo right now, which means that the inputs to whatever creative process we each arrive at can't be trusted either.
All this spells some tough blogging ahead. Ideally, I'd like to try to break some of the old habits but still write stuff that's worth reading. In practice, I may find that I'm too busy, or too focused on my pet concerns and manner of expression to jump too far out of my groove. It may take a while before it all comes together. Stay tuned...
