Quote for the Day
John F. Kennedy has become the Republicans' favorite Democratic president since, oh, Grover Cleveland, I guess. Here's a quote from JFK (courtesy of a great column by historian Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.) germane to the current situation:
"We must face the fact that the United States is neither omnipotent nor omniscient -- that we are only 6% of the world's population -- that we cannot impose our will upon the other 94% of mankind -- that we cannot right every wrong or reverse each adversity -- and that therefore there cannot be an American solution to every world problem."
Of course, any argument starting with the words "we must face the fact" is not going to get far with the current occupant of the White House, who apparently believes that the Constitution gives him the power to shape reality to fit his belief structure, and who, in his whole happy privileged life, has never needed to listen to or accommodate the point of view of anyone else. JFK, similar to Bush junior in many ways, at least had the wisdom to realize the limits of his, and our, power. Too bad he didn't take his own advice in Southeast Asia.
