Cheney's Daughter a Human Shield?
Everyone is now denying it, but it was reported earlier today that VP Dick Cheney is on his way to Amman, Jordan to pursuade his daughter Mary (who happens to be gay, BTW), not to enter Iraq in protest of the war. Interesting how news like this flares up and then vanishes... Even if it's not true, I wonder how it got started.
Update - 3/26 - 8:45 am PST:
Al-Jezeera is now reporting that a delegation of US officials, including four congressmen and Cheney's other daughter (the one who works in the State Department), is in fact in Amman on their way to Baghdad for cease-fire talks. It doesn't seem like this could possibly be right...

A Glimmer of Sanity
Apparently there are still 51 senators who understand the concept of responsible government and who are refusing to pass the cost of Bush's war along to future generations. Word just in that the Senate voted to cut the Bush tax cut by $351 billion, as 48 Democrats were joined by Snowe (R-ME) , Chafee (R - RI) and Voinovich (R - OH). Of course, the House is more firmly under control of the looneytoon right, so the final result is likely to be less encouraging, but this is a good sign that our legislators are not willing to hand the President a blank check, even during wartime. (sorry, no link - story is not yet posted, but was reported on CNN).

Odds and Ends
Kinda busy today so I’ll just throw a few quickies at you.
· City of God is a brilliant new film from Brazil about the rise and fall of gangs in the favellas (slums) of Rio during the 60s and 70s. Think of a cross between Mean Streets and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Worth a look.
· Over the past few months, I’ve run up quite a backlog of “outtakes” of reviews I’ve been writing for Comic Buyers Guide. Since they’re not running them, I might as well put them up here when things get a little slow. Here’s one on Precursor, an art book by Bill Sienkiewicz (one of the inspirations for the graphic look of the EA site, by the way).
· Obligatory war quip: President Bush, reminding listeners that the Geneva Conventions are one of the few international agreements that his Administration has not yet had a chance to withdraw from, warned Iraq to treat our prisoners nice. Um, we’re invading their country. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re not too happy about it. Perhaps they’ll lease an island off their coast and hold our troops there indefinitely as “enemy combatants,” without the protections of POW status. But no, that would be wrong.
