We the People
It’s always amazing to me how the proponents of war, violence and “forward-leaning” actions by our country intuitively see themselves as patriotic, and have no problem demonizing opponents as disloyal traitors. A few people I know who are against the war indeed fit the stereotype – their critical view is so profound that there is hardly anything America could ever do right in the world in their eyes. But that’s a minority, even among the opposition. Some of us feel such a profound attachment to our community that we feel obliged to speak out when the actions of our leaders appear irresponsible, short-sighted or self-serving. We’re a democracy, not a dictatorship. With the freedom to choose our government comes the responsibility of being held accountable for its actions. Loyalty to the leadership is admirable, but not when it constitutes complicity in an ill-conceived strategy. Here’s a great article that elaborates on these themes (thanks to “Wilkins” for the link).
