The Rob and Brian Show
Way back in 1984, my high school staged a mock presidential debate in a doomed effort to drum up interest and enthusiasm in that year's dire contest between Ronald Reagan and the hapless Walter Mondale. As the token liberal in the Philly-area private prep school, I took up the mantle of the Dems. My worthy opponent was basketball star and Student Council President Brian Duffy, and for 60 minutes, we staged a pretty good contest in front of the assembled rabble. In fact, all things considered, I'd have to say the debate went considerably better than the ensuing election.
Flash forward 15 years, when the estimable Mr. Duffy got my email address from the school alumni office and included me on the distribution list for his series of comments on the controversial 2000 presidential contest. Unsurprisingly, Duff's incipient Reaganism had hardened into a formidable arsenal of right-wing talking points which simply begged for puncture and rebuttal. Before long, we were at it again - bombarding each other with links to the WSJ editorial page, Salon, the National Review and the Nation, along with generous piles of pointed commentary.
Now that I've entered the Blog arena, I've done something I may live to regret: I've invited Duff to join the fray. Periodically in the Rants section of this site, I'll post links to Duff's blog and my withering replies to his wrong-headed screeds. Perhaps it's presumptuous to assume this will amuse anyone but ourselves, but hey, people watch Hannity and Colmes. And besides, it's a Blog, so we don't really have to care!
